How often do we encourage or motivate ourselves with positive thinking? Do we also know that our actions depends on our thinking? Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks are about as happy as they want to be.” Was he implying that, when it comes to our happiness, we actually have a choice? Apparently, yes. Research abounds on the impact of positive and negative thinking on ourselves and others, and the fact that we have the potential to transform ourselves by changing our habits of mind.

We humans, it seems, have anywhere from 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. But according to some research, as many as 98 percent of them are exactly the same as we had the day before. Talk about creatures of habit! Even more significant, 80 percent of our thoughts are negative.

Negative thoughts are particularly draining. Thoughts containing words like “never,” “should,” and “can’t,” complaints, whining or thoughts that diminish our own or another’s sense of self-worth deplete the body by producing corresponding chemicals that weaken the physiology. No wonder we’re exhausted at the end of the day!

The good news is, if you can recognize a negative or limiting thought, you can consciously choose to change it. Instead of saying, “I can’t meet this deadline,” try “I don’t know how I’m going to meet this deadline, but I know I can if I give it enough thought.” The chemicals produced by the body as a response to this kind of thought are more likely to support you in fulfilling your goal.



Other things you should try;

••• For every worst case scenario worry you think of, imagine the best thing that could happen.

••• Spend 5 minutes imagining your dream life and write down what steps you need to take to get there.

••• Spend some time with someone you admire if you can

••• Do 3 things to cut out negativity from your life. Unfollow, delete, or do something else to remove negative feelings from your life.

••• Set a positive mantra(word or phrase to keep focus) for the day and be consistent with it.

••• Give genuine compliments to people randomly.

••• Think about the best parts of your life while you’re waiting in line or stuck at a stoplight or just less busy.

••• Take a few minutes to write down your values. What is most important to you in life?

••• Whenever you have a minute, take 3 full deep breaths to get your oxygen flowing.

••• Dance, run, jump on a trampoline. Get out there and get your endorphins going for at least 5 minutes.

••• Do something nice for someone unexpectedly. Keep your eyes open for someone who could use a boost!

••• Share good memories with friends and reminisce over good times.

••• Learn something new from someone.

••• Remember that other people’s opinions say more about them than you. Make this your mantra.

••• Keep good on your promises to yourself. Do at least 1 thing to work towards a goal and pat yourself on the back. Give yourself enough credit.

••• Make eye contact and smile at everyone you walk past. A smile is the simplest gift you could give.

••• Laugh for no good reason. Laugh at silly, annoying things that happen and move on. Life’s more fun when you’re laughing.

••• Meditate for 5 minutes. That’s it!

••• Think about what you can learn from the challenges you’re currently facing. What are they teaching you?

••• Question negative thoughts you have constantly. Could the opposite be true?

••• Do one simple thing that fills your heart with joy – painting, biking, singing in the car, whatever!

••• Learn more about a cause that’s important to you and brainstorm what you can do to help.

••• Fill your feed with positivity. Follow someone or an organization that inspires you. Your social media feeds should be full of things you love, that’s why It’s your should be about you.

••• Go for a walk and admire the world around you.

••• Print out a positive quote you love and put it on your bathroom mirror or by your desk.

••• Create a positive thinking playlist that instantly makes you smile. Music works magic believe it or not.

••• Call someone that you haven’t talked to in a while.

••• Write yourself a love letter. Be poetic about how amazing you are. Everyone is a poet.

••• Look for the good in every single person you see. Compliment the people you really admire.

••• Eat something different.

••• Be thankful
